Clubs & Activities

Welcome to Winter 2023-24 Clubs!  

Who? 

Participation in clubs is offered to all students in grades 5-7 unless specifically stated otherwise. Clubs meet one time per week, beginning December 4th and running through Friday, February 16. Interested students should reply by completing the sign-up link by Friday December 1, 2023. Sign ups will remain open until December 15th. 

When? 

Morning clubs run from 7:35 am to 8:35 am, with parent drop-off at the main entrance. Afternoon clubs run from 3:20-4:25 pm, with parent pick-up or late bus departure at 4:25 pm. 

Why? 

Middle School is all about exploration, and trying new things. You don’t have to be an expert, you just need to be willing to try. Clubs are also a great way to meet students that share similar interests.  

What? 

Use the description below to determine which club interests your child. Make sure that you pay close attention to the time and dates of the meetings. A late bus will be available with limited neighborhood stops.

Day

Mondays 

Wiffle Ball

Instructor: Mr. Webster

Location: Large gym 

Be the 1st to pitch a no-hitter, or hit for the cycle! Perhaps, making the blooper reel may be more your style! This club is for all baseball enthusiasts, fans of the game, or for those wishing to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. We will practice the art of wiffleball pitching (screwball, curves, sinkers, etc). We will play 2 sided games. And like the pros, we will keep track of stats throughout the season for some added fun!

 

Crochet Club

Instructor: Ms. Nyerick

Location: STEM

Join the Crochet Club and discover the world of yarn and creativity. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, we welcome everyone with open arms. This club provides a relaxed and supportive environment where you'll learn the basics of crochet, practice your skills, and create amazing projects. From scarves and hats to blankets and toys, the possibilities are endless! So come join us, grab your crochet hooks, and let's get hooked on crochet together!

Dancercise Club

Instructor: Ms. Donnell

Location: Mandarin Room

“Guang Chang Dance” is a popular group fitness dance exercise in China. Friends and strangers alike gather together in the morning and evening to dance to popular Chinese songs in a public square or a park. They dance for fun and for good health. Our Dancercise is inspired by the Chinese group dance. It is fun and easy to learn. Join the club to dance and work out for both a happy mind and healthy body. No experience is necessary. Just bring your sneakers. Let’s dance!

 

Book Club

Instructor: Ms. Milan

Location: Library

Calling all bookworms and budding bibliophiles! Join our exciting middle school book club where we embark on literary adventures and share our love for reading with fellow book enthusiasts.

What to expect: Unveiling new worlds: Dive into a diverse selection of books, exploring genres that range from captivating mysteries to heartwarming stories of friendship and belonging. We will have sparking discussions, creative expressions, and book recommendations galore! This club is great for readers of all levels!

Jumprope and Hoops 

Instructor: Mr. Webster

Location: Big Gym

Come join the morning fun as we take jump rope to the next level in the areas of single rope freestyle, single rope pairs, single rope speed, double Dutch speed, and double Dutch freestyle. After some time with the jump ropes, participants will have the option to switch to basketball or continue with jump rope. Open to all skill levels and designed to challenge all students at their own comfortable pace. Goals may vary depending on students' individual interests. Outcomes generally include enhanced friendships, improved fitness, increased confidence, and a greater appreciation for jump rope as a fun, challenging option in maintaining/improving fitness. (20 student max)

 

Podcast Club

Instructor: Dr. Bish

Location: Dr. Bish’s Room

Students will learn how to plan, research, write and record a podcast of their interest.  Students can work independently or in groups to generate a topic of interest and provide facts and information about it.  They will use Garageband on our special Apple computer to record, and each podcast will be recorded to a powerpoint with pictures about the topic.  Families can share in on their students' successes by viewing the podcasts on our own Youtube channel.

Designing Art in Your World

Instructor: Ms. Kalbach

Location: Art Room

Designing your favorite things cartoons, cars, fashions, or architecture is fun. Designers make our lives interesting. Simple designing and sewing techniques will be taught. Sketchbooks, art supplies and some fabrics will be supplies. Students will learn many design techniques,

especially fashion, cars and architectural designs while having fun and using their imagination. Students will also keep a sketchbook and a portfolio of their designs.

 

Ultimate Frisbee Club

Instructor: Ms. Thompson

Location: Health Room

In Ultimate Frisbee we will play a football-like game but with no tackling. There will be a frisbee instead of a football, and the vibe is friendly and social. Everyone is welcome in Ultimate whether you are experienced or completely new to the sport. Join us for some fun and fresh air on Tuesdays after school!

 

Burnt Toast Cooking Club (5th Graders only) 

Instructor: Mr. Schaffer and Ms. Vicke

Location: Cafeteria kitchen

Like the name implies we will be doing a lot of experiential learning in this club.  We will begin with simple recipes that students can do on their own, then gradually work on more advanced cooking techniques.  We will focus on breakfast and lunch, primarily. This club will be capped at 12 students.

Lacrosse Club  

Instructor: Mr. Kent 

Location: upper field/slim gym 

The goal of the club is to have fun playing lacrosse, exercise, and improving your skills along the way. Participation is open to all grades and all ranges of experience. Those new to lacrosse are welcome.

5th/6th Grade Flag Football 

Instructor: Mr. Webster 

Location: Large Gym 

Down! Set! Hike! Do you like playing flag football? This club is available to boys and girls of all skill levels. If it’s raining we will play in the big gym and have just as much fun. Even if this is your first time, you will learn basic skills to be successful in game situations. This is flag football so there is NO CONTACT, which allows players of all body sizes and skills to play together.

 

Drawing and Cartooning 

Instructor: Mr. Turnbull

Location: Art Room

This is a club for those who have a love of drawing.  This is Drawing and Cartooning Club; We will have drawing and cartooning activities and exercises for all those who love all things cartoons.  Graphic Novels and Comic Books will be made available.  Animated GIF assignments and basic computer animation skills will be taught.  We will experiment with stop motion animation.  We will work on both individual and group projects.  If you think there isn't enough drawing, cartooning or art in your life, this is a great club for you!

 

Creative Writing 

Instructor: Ms. Hanna

Location: D115

If you enjoy writing, join this club! You can begin new writing projects or continue something you have been working on. We will share our work with each other for helpful feedback and develop our writing skills in a supportive environment.

Popcorn and a Movie

Instructor: Ms. Looney

Location: B106

Encounter and express ideas, experiences, and emotions; be a part of something; laugh, reflect and share your thoughts. Discussion after each movie. Most movies will take two meetings to view and discuss. And, of course, nothing goes better together than popcorn and a movie!

 

3D Printing and Modeling

Instructor: Mr Barnes

Location: B137

Does 3D printing interest you? Do you want to know how to make 3D models on a computer? Do you want to get into makerspace mode so you can turn your ideas into projects? This club is for you  - no experience necessary.

Chess Club

Instructor: Ms. Thompson

Location: Library

Pawn-dering what to do after school on Thursdays? Join the chess club from 3:15-4:15 in the library.

 

Projects in Art

Instructor: Mr. Newby

Location: Art Room

If you found that making a mask or doing watercolor in art class was really satisfying continue the process with your own project. If you just have a  yearning to be creative this is the place to be on Thursday afternoons.  Make the drawing, painting or sculpture that is in your minds eye with the help of Mr. Newby.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Instructor: Mr. Turnbull

Location: Art Room 

Dungeons and Dragons Club teaches to students the world's greatest fantasy RPG (Role-Playing Game):  Dungeons and Dragons.  Dungeons and Dragons helps students with Math, Creative Writing, Acting, Visual Arts, Problem Solving, Teamwork, Community Building and Imagination.  Invented in 1974, this board game has been cited by authors and great minds alike as a creative influence.  No prior experience is necessary.  Returning students are welcome.  Dungeons and Dragons is for EVERYONE!

 

Improv Club

Instructor: Ms. Nyerick

Location: Auditorium  

Unleash your inner comedian and join our improv club! No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun and think on your feet. We'll play games and exercises to help you develop your improv skills while working with other actors on stage.
